Beverley Racecourse is delighted to announce a new race to our calendar for 2025, approved by the Flat Pattern Committee (FPC) and transferred from Newmarket, the race was previously run as Listed Fred Archer Stakes (12f, 3yo+, July) The race will be renamed The Charlie Wood Stakes and run on Saturday 5th July as part of our feature Summer Saturday raceday.

Sally Iggulden, Chief Executive at Beverley Racecourse

“It’s tough at the moment to add quality to a race programme, and so we jumped at the chance of adding a second Listed race to our calendar, providing an excellent feature race to one of our flagship Saturdays in July. We very much hope that owners and trainers will support the new race.”

Who is Charlie Wood we hear you say?

Charlie Wood was an English flat jockey born in the Hull Slums. He won his first ever race in 1872 and was Champion jockey in 1887. He was a contemporary of Fred Archer and would go on to win the Derby three times, St Leger twice and ride such popular horses as Galtee More, St Simon and St Gatien.

After some scandal involving the Jockey Club at the time, race fixing and being warned off for nine years, Wood returned to the saddle to win the “Triple Crown” aboard Galtee More in 1887.

He was a highly regarded jockey in his time, known as a “strong and competent lightweight” jockey and excellent judge of a race.

Charlie Wood died in 1945.
